As owners of “Vintage Airstream Trailers”, we all can understand the amount of time, money, effort and the headaches that it takes to find the trailers of our choice, buy the that trailer/trailers, get the trailer home only to find out, the “restored” Vintage Airstream is really not so restored, but nothing more than some new flooring, drapes and cushions! Or, many of us decide to buy the “Fixer Upper” sometimes thinking it will cost less to restore it ourselves, only to find three years later, many thousands of dollars and no real end in site, we find out it’s a bunch more work than we thought. Then, there are those who go and pay someone to restore their trailer for them. Often times finding out it costs more than they thought and still takes a long time, but in the end, they have a quality job that “should” last their lifetime and maybe even their children’s.
So, we somehow get through it, we hook up the vintage trailer to the tow vehicle and off we go to enjoy the different places and things we love so much and dreamed about every night while we were doing all that work. When we get there, we see something, something that peaks our interest, we see, a Vintage Airstream being towed by a “Vintage Car/Truck”. Our first thoughts are “That is so cool”. We then start thinking about our favorite vintage car, something that could tow our “Vintage Airstream”. Our dream now becomes having a vintage car/truck towing our vintage trailer.
It’s not for everyone; it’s what I call true “Hardcore Vintage Trailering”. One must remember, many of the cars/trucks during the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s “did not” have disc brakes and air conditioning. Many, if not most of the “soon to be” tow rigs will have to be gone through. Everything, from brakes, transmissions, radiators, bearings, etc… just to get them safe and somewhat dependable, it all must be gone through before starting to pull that Vintage Trailer that you have spent so much time, money and effort on. Add to that, if you are pulling with something a “little different” parts maybe hard to come by and are not easily found at the local parts store. You should see the look on the parts guys face when you walk in and ask for a starter for a 1968 International Travelall.
Some VAC members in Region 2 have gone that extra step down “Vintage Lane”. They have found the old car, restored and have gotten it safe for travel/towing and our now proud owners of that “Vintage Tow”. Those members now not only have to travel with the many tools and parts needed to fix the trailer, but now also a “Vintage Tow”. The work is hard, it can take two/three times as much work, but the rewards can be awesome! Nothing looks better in front of a Vintage Airstream than a Vintage Tow rig.
Below, are a couple of pics of some “Vintage Trailer/Tow” rigs from the members of Region 2 VAC. If you have a pic of your vintage tow and trailer, send it to us! We’d love to post it.
